Nike x Tiffany & Co ‘Underwhelms’ After Fans Are Spoiled By Whimsical AI Art
By Mikelle Leow, 02 Feb 2023
The hearts of sneakerheads and luxury lovers swooshed when they learned that Nike and Tiffany & Co were linking up for a special launch. The two make “a legendary pair,” the sportswear giant and jeweler teased, and fans could hardly wait.
At long last—when the Nike x Tiffany & Co Air Force 1 1837 was eventually unveiled, shoppers were treated to a glimpse of the luxurious suede sneaker, its swoosh tinted by the signature robin-egg blue. A sterling silver tab adorns the heel, adding a touch of elegance to the classic silhouette.
It’s a simple yet dignified design, marrying Tiffany & Co’s understated classiness with Nike’s prominence as an everyday staple. However, in the days leading up to the launch, to assuade their impatience, fans rushed to AI art generators to imagine what the upcoming reveal might look like.

Fans were seemingly given the impression that the entire body of the Nike shoes would be splashed in Tiffany blue. Many of the AI concepts also pictured the footwear to be studded with gems and lined with more silver detailing. In one version, a gift box ribbon served as a shoelace.
The fantasical results were shared all over social media, so when the real deal walked in, people were disenchanted by the comparably barebones, nearly all-black look.

“There were so many good and interesting/provocative AI takes… that the actual product once revealed was a bit underwhelming,” describes Michael J. Miraflor, Chief Brand Officer at venture capital fund investing firm Hannah Grey.

On the other side of the coin, there are those who perceive the bot-generated designs to be childish-looking. “Something out of Disney Channel,” as one Twitter user puts it.
The silver lining, for the lack of a better phrase, is that fans are getting a touch of the bling they’ve been hoping for. The collaborative sneakers arrive in a Tiffany blue box, alongside sterling accessories like a whistle and shoe brush.
The use of automation and how it may play into the future of product design hits some ethical raw nerves, seeing as how tools like DALL-E and Midjourney are trained on real, human-made artworks, often without their knowledge or permission.
Though, it does beg the question: Is artificial intelligence officially more in sync with human expectations than humans themselves?
