Not even the Avengers or the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe can prepare you for what’s to come.
The nightmarishWinnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey opened in Mexico to an incredible, early US1 million box office, ahead of its actual limited theatrical release in the US on February 15.
Lots of money, lots of honey, as it turns out—not only is the production studio behind this haunting remake, Jagged Edge, already working on a sequel, but it’s also reimagining the worlds of Treasure Island and Peter Pan and developing a spinoff called Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare.
But wait, there’s more. Blood and Honey creator Rhys Frake-Waterfield now intends to conjure up an entire X-rated cinematic universe of beloved children’s stories. The filmmaker tells the Hollywood Reporter that the macabre storybook world will be filled with crossovers, where characters like Pooh and Bambi co-exist. And you thought the Heffalumps were creepy.
With the original Mickey Mouse scheduled to enter the public domain in 2024, Jagged Edge Productions might have one more character to toy with soon. However, the studio is breaking beyond the confines of Disney. Frake-Waterfield notes that there are “many, many, many other ideas” that don’t have to do with the House of Mouse, like old fairytales and urban legends—“concepts that are synonymous with your childhood.”
Well, if Shrek’s insurmountable success is anything to go by, this alternate universe of extremely twisted fairytales could be a hit.
