Chick-fil-A Opens ‘Brake Room’ For Delivery Riders To Pause And Unwind

The importance of delivery drivers cannot be understated. From sending time-sensitive packages across the city to delivering warm lunches, there’s no doubt these gig workers make life a little more convenient for everybody.
However, riding through the streets for hours on end, especially in times of inclement weather, isn’t easy, especially in the populated metropolis that is New York City. As such, Chick-fil-A, in collaboration with McCann New York, has opened a rest stop to welcome the 65,000 drivers in the region to stop by and catch a break.
Aptly dubbed ‘The Brake Room’, the rest stop is situated on Third Avenue between 83rd and 84th streets—a busy spot where many riders pass through in the course of a day’s work. Drivers can simply enter by showing proof of a completed delivery within the past week.
After parking their bikes at secure indoor docks, delivery riders can then access restrooms, Wi-Fi, charging ports, and free coffee and tea while they catch their breath, or seek shelter while it’s storming outdoors.
The company tells The Architect’s Newspaper it wanted to design a space wherein drivers feel comfortable and welcome—a space that the community can use to “recharge in between deliveries.”
“We created The Brake Room as a small gesture, a little thing to thank them for all they do to serve our guests, especially in a market experiencing high demand in sometimes harsh winter weather conditions,” says Joe Saracino, Senior Vice President at Chick-fil-A.
Delivery riders in the vicinity can stop by The Brake Room from February 16 to April 11, 2023, Monday through Saturday. The fast-food chain revealed it was possible that the project could be extended if it proves to be a success.
