Samsung ‘Galaxy Ring’ Could Track Your Health Without Your Undivided Commitment
Is your smartwatch still too chunky for you? If all goes well, a Samsung smart ring might be the one to steal your affection.
The South Korean tech giant has just submitted a trademark application for a ‘Galaxy Ring’ with the Korean Intellectual Property Right Information Services, fueling speculation of a wearable gadget that’s no larger than your fingertips and can monitor your health on the go.
While details are extremely scant, the filing also describes the potential Galaxy Rings as “smart devices for measuring health… and/or sleep, in the form of a ring.”
That’s all for now. However, Gizmodo notes that it’s a no-brainer the ring would be connected to Samsung Health, to track physiological data. It could also sport a temperature sensor since there’s already one coming to the Galaxy Watch 5.
Samsung will have to commit a little more to go head to head, or finger to finger, with the Oura Ring, one of the industry’s most prominent smart ring brands. The device can also monitor steps and sleep, on top of reading body temperature.
The company will also have to convince customers that they need a ring more than a watch, the latter of which not only has a display but also tends to be cheaper. With that said, smart rings are more fashionable and boast a longer battery life.
Samsung has been exploring the concept of a Galaxy Ring as far back as 2015. For instance, last June, it filed a patent describing its design for a wearable finger device with a touch panel (pictured below).
Even though the brand has been toying with this idea for years, there’s no guarantee that the smart ring will come to fruition yet. To avoid disappointment, you should refrain from putting your finger on a date for now.
