‘MissJourney’ Only Generates AI Artwork Of Women To Close The Gender Gap
When you think of an occupation, often, a man might spring to mind. That’s the same response by artificial intelligence, which purportedly considers women less than 20% of the time when conjuring up images of common professions or characters.
AI tools are here to stay, so it’s essential they have a lasting impact that will do some good. Responding to the phenomenal rise of art generators like DALL-E and Midjourney, TEDxAmsterdam Women and creative network Ace have launched MissJourney, a text-to-image generator that creates exclusive portraits of women.

The website poses the question: “They say that AI is pushing mankind forward, but what about womankind?”
Rolled out to coincide with International Women’s Day, the web app aims to normalize seeing females in the roles of CEOs, doctors, lawyers, and even superheroes. This means that over time, their presence will leave a deep impression on AI datasets too, and there may come a day when all of society is adequately represented.
Wired to generate more diverse results, the platform challenges developers and creators to correct stereotypes in AI systems to empower all genders in the online space. MissJourney is “actively countering current biased image generators and ensuring we build inclusive digital realities—right from the start,” its makers explain.
Users can create a portrait for free now by stating the role they want their subject to be in, along with their desired style, color, or location. For instance, you could get MissJourney to generate an image of a designer in the style of Van Gogh, as pictured below.
