Leica Celebrates Disney’s Centennial With Special ‘100 Years Of Wonder’ Camera
By Alexa Heah, 31 Mar 2023
Leica, known for its precise imaging instruments, has helped served creatives all across the world for over a century. And what better way to mark the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney’s genius than with a collaboration dedicated to his vision and passion for animated filmmaking?
Since the dawn of animation, Disney has tapped on Leica’s cameras and projectors, building its movie studio over time into the behemoth it is today. To commemorate the enduring partnership, the duo recently unveiled a limited-edition Leica Q2 | Disney ‘100 Years of Wonder’ camera.
Interestingly, the device harks back to the beginnings of the pair’s collaboration—back when Disney dramatically changed the landscape of animated movies by using the innovative ‘Leica Reel’ made from stills running on 35 mm film projections.
As such, the design of the special-edition camera draws on a model sheet created in 1937 by famed animator Don Towsley, with a Mickey Mouse print on its top plate, and a protective dust bag adorned with matching original Disney graphics.
The gadget’s exterior inspires “evocative imagination” with the use of an unusual material—reminiscent of tracing paper—that was once used by Disney creators to pencil scenes and sketches, giving the camera a sophisticated aesthetic that makes the perfect collector’s item.
Only 500 sets of the limited-edition camera, which retails for US$5,995, will be sold worldwide. It will be available at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, and authorized dealers beginning in April 2023.
