Microsoft Gears Up Its Bing AI Chat For A More Ad-Filled Experience
By Nicole Rodrigues, 31 Mar 2023
After Microsoft introduced its upgraded, artificially-intelligent Bing, traffic has increased to over 100 million daily active users, with not many being able to resist taking part and testing out this new wave of AI tools.
Bing and the revamped web browser Edge integrated AI chat and search engines for a more seamless user experience. In addition, it promised to deliver more accurate and fine-tuned answers to questions, simultaneously delivering a more natural response. It also removed the need to sift through different results and compile conflicting answers to questions when Bing would do all the hard work for you and present the needed information in a neat summary.
Of course, everything comes with a price. And in Bing’s case, it is the addition of advertisements alongside your search results.
As announced by Yusuf Mehdi, the company’s corporate VP, Bing aims to incorporate “meaningful” ways to drive up traffic and revenue to publishers. In order to do so, you might see more links to articles from associated publishers when you hover over the provided result.
Mehdi also mentions a “rich caption” of licensed content from brands Microsoft is partnered with next to chat answers.
PC Mag points out that the ChatGPT-backed Bing allowed for a streamlined user experience and that adding advertisements might make traditional search engine models redundant. To this, Microsoft has reassured that it is working on ways not to break down the ecosystem.
According to Mehdi, this is “early days,” and there is no deadline for implementing the move.
