Google To Launch Its First Foldable Phone—‘Pixel Fold’—With ‘Most Durable Hinge’
By Alexa Heah, 20 Apr 2023
Google is set to soon rival Samsung’s foldable smartphones, with recent reports claiming the long-awaited Pixel Fold could debut on May 10 at Google I/O. The gadget, known internally by its codename ′Felix’, is said to have the “most durable hinge on a foldable” mobile device.
According to CNBC, which cited internal communciations seen by its reporter, the smartphone will “open like a book” to reveal a 7.6-inch display screen—the same size as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4. Its price tag, estimated to be over US$1,700, is likely to hover around the latter’s US$1,799 cost.
One key difference is that Google’s Pixel Fold will weigh slightly heavier than its competitor at 10oz, though this could be due to a larger battery that the company claims will last for 24 hours, or up to 72 hours on low power mode.
Furthermore, the gadget is said to be water-resistant and pocket-sized, with an external screen measuring just 5.8 inches across. Internally, the device will be powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chip—the same processor featured in the brand’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
Android Police noted that while the chip didn’t have the fastest computing speed, it has still proven to be an efficient choice, with users able to enjoy many Pixel-exclusive features. Will Google’s most expensive smartphone live up to the hype? We’ll soon find out.
