Getty Images may have previously appeared resistant to the role of generative artificial intelligence in stock photography, but recent moves point to a different worldview. The company has joined forces with Nvidia to introduce yet another text-to-image platform, called Generative AI by iStock. Powered by Nvidia’s Picasso model, the model is trained using Getty Images’ and iStock’s extensive libraries, ensuring it steers clear of generating images that include trademarks or recognizable figures.
The service, specifically targeting small and medium-sized businesses, offers a new option for obtaining precise images that might be difficult or impossible to capture with traditional photography methods. Users can enter simple text prompts into the platform to generate photo-quality images at resolutions up to 4K.
Generative AI by iStock is available for a fee of US$14.99, which includes 100 prompts with each prompt generating four images. Customers can download and license any of the generated visuals, and the service includes legal indemnification at no extra charge. This is a key aspect for businesses looking to use AI in their marketing without legal concerns about the content they are using.
However, the platform has limitations regarding indemnification compared to Getty Images’ own AI offerings, with coverage for each iStock asset capped at US$10,000 to align with the license offered for the current library. The service also comes with in-built protections against generating images of known products, people, places, or other copyrighted elements.
42% of small-to-medium businesses and enterprises have begun using AI-generated works for marketing projects, according to iStock’s research.
“Our main goal with Generative AI by iStock is to provide customers with an easy and affordable option to use AI in their creative process, without fear that something that is legally protected has snuck into the dataset and could end up in their work,” explains Grant Farhall, iStock’s chief product officer. “Our AI Generator is easy to use, produces relevant and high-quality visuals, and is backed by our legal protection so customers can now safely use this new service, in combination with our amazing preâshot library, to elevate their work.”
Getty Images plans to introduce more features to the platform, such as inpainting and outpainting, allowing users to modify images based on text prompts. The upcoming Replace feature will provide similar capabilities with a focus on precise adherence to selected areas in images.
Generative AI by iStock is now accessible to iStock customers globally, supporting over 75 languages.
