Dyson is once again brushing on the fringes of innovation, this time to banish bad hair days and prevent fried tresses forever. On Monday, the company announced the Supersonic Nural, its “most intelligent” hair dryer yet, built with sensor technology that promises healthy, hydrated hair and a protected scalp.
Finding its roots in intensive research, the Supersonic Nural’s secret weapon is a network of Nural sensors that activate a suite of smart features, most notably the scalp protect mode. This option utilizes a time-of-flight sensor to measure the distance between the dryer and your head. As the gadget gets closer, it automatically reduces heat to a comfortable 55°C (131°F), preventing heat damage to both your scalp and hair. No more accidentally singeing your head—the dryer does the thinking for you.

“From our research into the science of hair, we know that there is a connection between the quality of hair and a healthy scalp. The scalp tissue comprises different layers, with the outermost layer serving as a barrier against external stressors,” shares Dyson’s head of research Shawn Lim. “ But when your scalp is damaged, moisture loss can occur, a key factor in our development of the Scalp protect mode feature. This helps to maintain scalp moisture levels and allows for gentle drying.”
Moreover, the tool remembers your preferred styling habits. The next time you pick up the dryer, it recalls your last-used heat and airflow settings for each attachment to streamline your grooming routine. And for those moments when you pause to section your hair or take a break, the device’s motion-sensing accelerometer kicks in, dialing down the airflow and noise automatically.
“If you’re able to limit heat damage, you can get a healthier scalp; and healthier hair,” explains founder and chief engineer James Dyson. “Our new Supersonic Nural has a time of flight sensor which recognizes your head and reduces the heat as it gets close to your hair, preventing heat damage to both your scalp and your hair.”
