An irresistibly cute Shiba Inu puppy sporting a tiny hat has officially graduated from meme stardom to the prestigious halls of the digital art world, fetching a jaw-dropping US$4.3 million as a non-fungible token (NFT).
Achi the dog in a knit beanie evolved into the Dogwifhat meme in 2018, which later inspired the Solana meme coin WIF. It was only a matter of time before the pooch was immortalized on the blockchain by her pawrents, a decision that turned out to be unprecedentedly lucrative.
The bidding war for this iconic image was nothing short of intense. It all started with a modest offer of 0.15 ETH, but the price quickly skyrocketed over the course of three days.
Ultimately, a well-known cryptocurrency trader named GCR, who prefers to stay anonymous, emerged victorious, placing a final bid of 1,210.8 ETH (equivalent to $4,311,234 at the time of the transaction). This narrowly surpasses the previous record for the most expensive meme NFT ever sold, featuring Doge the dog.
Memeland, an NFT venture collective affiliated with social media platform 9GAG, put up a valiant fight, reaching a bid of 1,100.69 ETH before GCR secured the piece.
How much is that doggy in the window, you ask? Probably much, much more than you think.
