Meta has announced the discontinuation of Workplace, its enterprise communication platform. This decision reflects a shift in efforts towards artificial intelligence and metaverse technologies, which the company believes will “fundamentally reshape the way we work.”
Launched in 2016, Workplace mirrored familiar features from Facebook, aiming to streamline communication and collaboration for businesses. While it garnered a respectable seven million paid subscribers by 2021, Workplace couldn’t secure dominance in a market filled with established players like Slack and Microsoft Teams.

The shutdown of Workplace will be gradual. Users will have full access until August 2025, with a read-only mode extending until May 2026 for data download. Meta recommends migrating to Workvivo, an enterprise communication platform acquired by Zoom in 2023.
Workplace’s closure echoes a trend in the tech industry: companies divesting from non-core products to focus on emerging technologies. For Meta, this means doubling down on AI and the metaverse.
