Apple Brings 2020’s Most Relatable Emoji To iOS 14.2, Along With 100+ Others

Apple’s launch of its 2020 emojis brings along a timely little reflection of how people around the world have been dealing with unexpected circumstances from the past year. The new 117 icons, which were released in iOS 14.2, iPadOS 14.2 and macOS 11 Big Sur on Thursday, includes the relatable ‘Smiling Face with Tear’ emoji.
While Emojipedia defines it as mainly an expression of feeling “touched, relieved, or grateful,” smartphone users will certainly resonate with its alternative meaning of “smiling through pain.” To put it simply, this is the ‘This Is Fine’ in emoji format.
Other highly-anticipated designs that have joined the update are the coveted ‘Bubble Tea’ emoji, ‘Pinched Fingers’—affectionally coined by some as “Italian hand”—and a redesigned ‘Face with Medical Mask’ emoticon that aims to remove negative connotations of wearing face coverings during the COVID-19 crisis.
There is also a rich selection of gender-inclusive emojis, such as the transgender flag, and multiple skin variants of a man in a veil, a woman in a tuxedo, and a man or gender-neutral person feeding a baby with a bottle.
Besides the new emojis, Apple has introduced an AR-enabled people detection feature in iOS 14.2 for iPhone 12 Pro users that would be especially helpful for social distancing.
