Mushu’s absence in Disney’s live-action Mulan has been a talking point ever since its trailer was released. While the movie is inspired by the 1998 animated film, director Niki Caro said the movie will not include Eddie Murphy’s dragon guardian and the iconic songs of the classic.
Caro explained in an interview that these elements will not be present in the remake in order to achieve a certain level of realism.
According to Digital Spy, Caro also said during a presentation that people don’t just “break into a song during a war,” and that Mulan going to war and then belting out tunes is just “not realistic.”
Caro stressed that she did not have anything against the songs, but they just did not fit with the tone that she was going for. However, while the film will not feature the musical numbers, it will pay some sort of tribute to them.
Caro then addressed the dragon that wasn’t in the room, Mushu, explaining that there will be a spiritual representation of the ancestors in the film, but no return nor update of Mushu.
Caro acknowledged that Mushu will always be “irreplaceable,” but having the comedic character around might not suit the serious tone of the movie.
The live-actionMulan opens in theaters on 27 March 2020.
