Apple has revealed that at least a couple of the posters for its Apple TV+ series were illustrated using the iPad Pro, sharing the creation process behind the artworks with new behind-the-scenes videos.
The company commissioned illustrator and digital painter Janice Sung to work on a poster for Dickinson. At a glance, the image looks like a photo, but Sung actually sketched it using an iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil.
In the video above, Sung describes her love for organic forms, explaining that she began on the piece by thinking up various poses that might be suitable for the 19th-century-based series, before sketching on the iPad Pro. She then added in the artwork’s dominant colors, and finally made it look photorealistic with lighting and shading.
For the For All Mankind series, Apple engaged Justin Erickson and Paige Reynolds, the designer and illustrator duo from Phantom City Creative, to create two posters.
The two explain that they first worked from a sketchbook with “really messy little thumbnail sketches,” and then picked their favorite drawings and brought them to the iPad Pro.
