LEGO has introduced a realistic replica of the International Space Station (ISS) with a literal launch into the stratosphere.
The new seven-foot-tall kit, debuting on 1 February at LEGO stores and online with a price of US$69.99, comprises 843 bricks with parts verified for authenticity by the folks at NASA. In comparison, the ISS is about the size of a five-bedroom house.
It even features a movable robotic arm inspired by the ISS’s Canadarm, adjustable faux solar panels, docks and access hatches.
The otherworldly idea came from a fan named Christoph Ruge, who participated in the LEGO Ideas crowdfunding campaign. According to Business Insider, LEGO reviews these suggestions, and brings them to life if it likes them. Creators then receive one-percent of sales and licensing revenue.
The model was created to celebrate 20 years of humans’ presence aboard the ISS, which welcomed its first long-term residents in 2000.
To give the International Space Set the launch it deserved, LEGO sent it 32 miles above the Earth via a high-altitude balloon.
“An out-of-this-world building experience is coming!” it tweeted alongside a video of the expedition.
LEGO encourages kids to dream big, and this campaign takes this philosophy soaring to new heights.
