In 2020, Jim Carrey is over with painting politically-charged imagery depicting Donald Trump. In the past couple of years, the actor and activist gained traction online for his artworks about the US president that were often filled with mockery and taunts.
“To me, that was like a time, and it’s been a time, where I just wanted to be the lighthouse that was saying, ‘Hey, stay off the rocks, you’re headed for the rocks,’” Carrey told Yahoo during the press tour for the Sonic the Hedgehog film.
Carrey added that while he thinks the world is “still headed for the rocks,” he got the message that “you understand my message, [and] I don’t need to be steeped in it anymore.”
If he had continued down this path, people would be “stuck in that kind of stuff,” he confessed.
Carrey posted his very last Trump-fueled illustration on 22 December 2019.
He stressed that, “It’s never been a matter of hating anyone.”
Carrey also expressed that in the current political climate, disagreements are often mistaken as hatred, and being someone who loves people, he refuses to buy into that mindset.
So, no more critical Trump artworks. His latest passion? Mangoes. Carrey’s recent self-portrait features the fruit with the message, “In 2020, Mangoes.”
