Just months ago, China was thriving as the manufacturing hub of the world. All of that came crashing down when the nation was hit by the novel coronavirus in December 2019.
Its streets are now deserted, and flights are being canceled, with countries placing bans on travelers visiting from mainland China. This means people working in China are also being restricted from traveling or returning to their home countries.
Apple is expressing its solidarity with employees isolated in China by delivering gift packages to them and their family members. First spotted by MacRumors, a post on Chinese social network Weibo spotlights photos of care packages sent over by the tech giant to tide over this troubling period.
According to the pictures, the care packages include snacks, coffee, tea, face masks, medical supplies, and even a 10.2-inch iPad.
The gifts arrive with a letter that reads, “Dear colleagues in Hubei and Wenzhou, we hope this note finds you healthy and well. Since the last communication with you, we understand that you are all staying strong in this challenging time. We understand the difficulties you are facing and would like to provide our best support to you and your families.”
Apple then acknowledged that Hubei and Wuhan city had been “hit hardest” by the COVID-19 outbreak, with a reported “2,835 lives” already claimed.
“We are sending our best wishes to you,” it continued. “On behalf of the entire Apple Team, together with another CareKit for you and your families.”
Apple wrote that the package contained “comfort items” along with an iPad to aid children’s learning or ease boredom as families stay indoors to contain the virus.
Apple announced at its annual shareholder meeting on 26 February that its revenue goals in March would not be met as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. CEO Tim Cook expressed that the company is placing the wellbeing of employees first and donating to relief efforts amid the crisis.
