McDonald’s left fans and the media in a crunch when it announced it would be debuting a “5G smart” product in China on 15 April, the day Apple was rumored to launch the 2020 iPhone SE (and it did).
On the days leading to the unveiling, McDonald’s China posted a series of ads teasing what looked like a smartphone, including sneak glimpses at a rear camera, facial recognition, and a liquid bezel-free design.

Customers now discover that the visuals were for the chain’s new McCrispy Chicken. Say what?
It turns out “5G” stands for “five technologies” boasted by the fried chicken, namely taste, freshness, juiciness, crispiness, and “multiple forms,” as translated in a tweet by Daniel Ahmad, a senior analyst at Asian game market research firm Niko Partners.
Those anticipating a tech product might be disappointed by the anti-climatic reveal, but to put things into perspective, there are much, much weirder things going on in the world right now.
