The world’s predicament in 2020 has been widely likened to a Black Mirror episode that has gone on for too long. For this reason, producers of the Netflix dystopian anthology series haven’t been working on the sixth season as life is already tough enough.
Charlie Brooker, creator of the hit series, told Radio Times in an interview that he is unsure if people will be able to “stomach” a new Black Mirror season during this climate.
Brooker said he has been “busy, doing things” during this downtime, but wasn’t at liberty to elaborate on current projects. What he could reveal, though, was that he is “not working away” on a new season of Black Mirror.
“At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart,” the producer commented.
The previous season of Black Mirror dropped on Netflix in June 2019, but the likelihood of a followup happening around the same time this year is slim.
In the meantime, Brooker hopes to “revisit [his] comic skill set,” and is currently working on scripts “aimed at making [him] laugh.”
In a similar vein, Netflix announced that it is producing a series created completely from home as crew members and actors practice social distancing. The show will focus on how people have been dealing with the lockdown.
