Facebook challenges video conferencing platform Zoom with its new Messenger Rooms, now available worldwide to everyone.
Similar to Zoom, Messenger Rooms lets users add playful virtual backgrounds to their video calls. However, the feature supports video calls up to 50 participants, unlike Zoom, which allows 100 participants.
Messenger Rooms has no time limits for the video calls, giving it an advantage over Zoom’s one-hour limits for users without premium accounts.
Facebook will alert users when a friend has created a room through a new section in the news feed or via notifications. Messenger Rooms allows users to share a link to others without Facebook accounts to join in on a video call, as well.
The company will soon let users join and create calls from Instagram’s direct messaging feature, WhatsApp, and on Portal, making video conferences accessible for users in various platforms. Messenger Rooms is now available through Messenger and Facebook’s app.
