For generations, kids were limited to just one or two colors among their art materials to represent skin tones, if any at all. Otherwise, they had to make do with what they had by mixing shades together.
It’s been a long time coming, but Crayola finally has a solution to this silent struggle. The art supply company has just launched a ‘Colors of the World’ selection that finally goes beyond singular, inaccurate shades of orange, pink, brown, and the ilk. The pack features 24 “specially-formulated colors” developed with the help of Victor Casale, former MAC Cosmetics chief chemist and current MOB Beauty CEO, to represent “over 40 global skin tones.”
“Crayola wants every child to be able to color themselves and the people they love by using crayons that accurately mirror them,” the company reveals in a press release. As such, the swatches are imbued with “subtle shades” that diverse communities around the world will hopefully relate with.
The “colors of the world” are grouped into three main shades: ‘Almond’, ‘Golden’, and ‘Rose’, indicating the cool and warm tones of various complexions. Deliberately realistic names like ‘Light Golden’, ‘Medium Deep Rose’, and ‘Deep Almond’ allow children to find the shades they need, as will color references available at the sides of the box.
Eight additional hues, totaling to 32 crayons, will help young artists color eyes and hair more precisely.
“With the world growing more diverse than ever before, Crayola hopes our new Colors of the World crayons will increase representation and foster a greater sense of belonging and acceptance,” said Rich Wuerthele, CEO of Crayola. “We want the new ‘Colors of the World’ crayons to advance inclusion within creativity and impact how kids express themselves.”
The colorful pack, priced at US$1.77, is available at Walmart.
