The Ewoks in Star Wars are silly and furry teddy bear-like beings that have naturally dominated sales as novel toy merchandise.
Beneath all that fur, these creatures are a lot scarier than they seem. Concept designer Jake Lunt Davies recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo of Wicket actor Warwick David in his costume, revealing what an Ewok looks like without its fur coat.
“Ewok sans fur. Scary stuff,” he wrote. “Fabricating Warwick’s costume in the Creature shop.” Davies added that the image was from extra footage in The Return of the Jedi Blu-ray edition.
Ewoks also appeared at the end of The Rise of Skywalker as a reference to the past film, Return of the Jedi, where they appeared first. However, the concept art was a throwback to several Star Wars movies, which could mean that Ewoks were intended to feature in various episodes but did not make the final cut.
As one Instagram user describes, a furless Ewok looks more like “a monster” than a lovable teddy bear.
