Donald Trump’s re-election campaign has released a T-shirt design that critics now associate with Nazi ideologies.
The ‘America First’ T-shirt is currently being sold on the campaign’s website for US$30, and arrives in sizes for both men and women. The top sports a blue-outlined eagle facing the left and gripping a circular flag. The banner above reads, “Trump 2020,” and the words “America First” are embossed in red above the print.
The bald eagle was selected to represent the seal of the United States by the Founding Fathers in 1782. However, it also brought to mind the Reichsadler, the imperial eagle adopted by Adolf Hitler in 1935 as Germany’s national symbol.
The official national insignia of Nazi Germany featured a black eagle facing the right and holding a circle with the swastika symbol. The Anti-Defamation League has labeled the Nazi eagle as a symbol of hate, which was appropriated by neo-Nazis and white supremacists post-World War II.
Internet users pointed out the apparent similarities and called out the T-shirt design for prompting hate. “I didn’t think the Trump logo that looks like a Nazi eagle could possibly be real, and then I checked, and it’s for sale on a tee on the official Trump campaign site,” MSNBC producer Nick Ramsey suggested.
Facebook has since removed ads featuring the merchandise from its platform, per The Independent.
