Those eager to see more distinct design changes to the iPhone’s hardware should be in for a treat this fall. As numerous reports and leaks have suggested in the past, the flagship iPhone 12 models are expected to be encased in a metal frame reminiscent of that on the iPhone 4.
To help you visualize using the upcoming iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max in your hand, tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee secured dummy units of the lineup in all three anticipated sizes. He even fired them up with a simulation of the new iOS 14.
2020 will likely see Apple’s largest smartphone yet, currently referred to by the public as the ‘iPhone 12 Pro Max’. The model is believed to feature a display measuring at 6.7 inches, while the current iPhone 11 Pro Max sports a 6.5-inch display.
There should also be a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and two 6.1-inch models—the first being a basic-tier iPhone 12 and the other a higher-end Pro model.
In Brownlee’s video, the dummy models feature flat metal frames at the sides, much like the iPhone 4 frame and the edges of the new iPad Pros. Not only will they bring a refreshing change in terms of visuals, but the YouTuber also noted that the revamped design will make the iPhones easier to grip.
Through video editing, he also visualizes the lineup to run on iOS 14 for a more realistic take on how the real iPhones might appear.
However, since they’re dummy units, expect to see disparities in the finalized design as they are mainly utilized by accessory producers to design phone cases in time for launches. Phone case makers will only need to see changes affecting the fit of the covers, so updates to certain features like the notch or camera won’t be necessary here.
With that being said, the full iPhone 12 lineup is predicted to adopt OLED displays, including the lower-end variations. However, the two basic iPhone 12 handsets are believed to feature a dual rear lens setup, while the Pro versions will sport a triple rear lens configuration with a LiDAR scanner. A supply chain report by Nikkei Asian Review also purported that all the models will support 5G connectivity.
