Sensual film 365 Days on Netflix is facing pushback for glorifying “sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape.”
The Polish drama, starring Michele Morrone and Anna-Maria Sieklucka, has been described as “controversial” on Netflix’s website and received a “mature” television rating for “sex, nudity, sexual violence, language and smoking.”
The film is based on Blanka Lipinska’s novel 365 dni. It tells the tale of a mafia boss imprisoning a young woman and giving her 365 days to fall in love with him.
Welsh singer Duffy wrote an open letter to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings requesting for the “irresponsible” film to be taken down from its platform.
“365 Days glamorizes the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape,” Duffy wrote in the open letter, shared by Deadline. “This should not be anyone’s idea of entertainment, nor should it be described as such, or be commercialized in this manner.”
The musician went into detail about how the movie might have “brought great hurt” to victims who have endured trauma the “film glamorizes.” A change.org petition was also posted online asking for the film to be removed from Netflix, claiming it promotes “Stockholm Syndrome and abuse.”
“For Netflix to make a movie glorifying sex slavery is not only in bad taste, but it continues to perpetuate sexual stereotypes of women being treated as property and sexual conquests, as well as promoting Stockholm Syndrome,” the page’s description reads.
