A wooden sculpture of US first lady Melania Trump, built in her hometown in Slovenia, was torched on Independence Day.
The statue was left disfigured and blackened on its plinth on 4 July, and was removed by Brad Downey—the artist who commissioned the sculpture—the day after the police alerted him that it was burnt.
“I want to know why they did it,” Downey told Reuters. The sculpture was built in 2019 to shine a light on Melania’s status as an immigrant, who married Donald Trump, a man known for his anti-immigration policies.
Downey has filed a police report and is keen to interview those who did the act if they are found. “The investigation in this case has not been completed yet so we cannot reveal details due to the interest of further procedures,” police spokesperson Alenka Drenik said.
Downey told The New York Times that despite it being torched, the features of the statue are still intact, and the face is still visible. Downey has stored the sculpture in a studio in Slovenia, and is planning to showcase it in an exhibition on September. “The blue dress is still all blue,” he said.
