Studio Ghibli’s dreamy world presents itself in the form of new breezy Hawaiian-style pieces from its clothing line.
The 2020 Hawaiian Collection, launched by the animation studio’s merchandise sub-brand GBL, peppers nostalgic but subdued motifs of My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service all over Hawaiian fashion-inspired shirts and skirts.
GBL prides itself as a label for fans of Hayao Miyazaki’s work who are now grown up, so Ghibli elements are tastefully—but tactfully and subtly—incorporated into much of its fashionwear.
Within the summery drop are matching shirts, skirts, slacks, drawstring totes, and bandanas bearing two distinct patterns reminiscent of the two films to take you on a trip back to your childhood days.
The yellow ‘Memories of Koriko’ print draws upon visuals from the film’s picturesque main setting, Koriko, as well as the characters Kiki, Tombo, and Jiji the talking cat.
The blue and green design, ‘Acorn Leaf’, evokes sweet memories of My Neighbor Totoro through tiny Totoro silhouettes playing “hide and seek” among acorn and soot sprite graphics.
The collection carries sizes small through extra large. Unfortunately, orders can only be made within Japan. Since they’re official Studio Ghibli merchandise, the line also won’t be as friendly on the pocket, with the tops being priced at JP¥11,880 (US$110) apiece and skirts setting you back JP¥12,880 (US$120).
Like the wonderful Studio Ghibli films, these can only be a daydream for now.
