The late Breonna Taylor fronts the cover of O, The Oprah Magazine’s September issue. This is the first time in the 20-year history of the magazine where founder Oprah Winfrey will not appear on the cover.
The issue features a digital rendering of the 26-year-old EMT officer, who was killed by police officers executing a no-knock search warrant in March. The Black Lives Matter movement continues to demand justice for her death as there hasn’t been any legal action taken against the officers.
Winfrey aims to shed light on Taylor’s unjustified death by putting her on the cover. Winfrey also requested her readers to make a difference by signing petitions and contributing to Louisville bail in her column.
“Only in the wake of George Floyd’s filmed execution was national attention brought to the shooting death of Breonna Taylor, two and a half months after she was killed,” Winfrey wrote in the column.
“Pleas for justice have fallen on deaf ears. As I write this, in early July, just one of the three officers involved has been dismissed from the police force. This officer blindly fired ten rounds from his gun, some of which went into the adjoining apartment. The other two officers still have their jobs,” she added.
O magazine enlisted digital artist Alexis Franklin to create the cover of Taylor based on the portrait she took of herself.
