The White House’s deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino posted a fake video showing Joe Biden sleeping during an interview on his Twitter account last Sunday night.
The doctored video saw Biden sound asleep and snoring during a televised interview. Twitter has since flagged the clip, branding it as “manipulated media.”
“This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner,” the social media platform said.
According to CBS Sacremento anchor John Dabkovich, the original video was of American singer Harry Belafonte talking to the anchor. Biden’s face had then been digitally placed onto Belafonte’s body, Dabkovich described.
“This is fake. You know how I know? I was the co-anchor in studio. We were interviewing Harry Belafonte,” Dabkovich clarified in a tweet. The original interview took place in October 2011, and the interviewer could be heard mentioning the name “Harry.”
Social media users were quick to condemn Scavino’s stunt, including Belafonte himself. He offered a statement to the New York Times, saying, “A technical glitch in an interview I did nine years ago now becomes another one of their lies, more of their fake news.”
