Street fashion brand Vetements publicly called out Balenciaga for ripping off its T-shirt design with a side-by-side comparison photo of identical black shirts with “Hi, my name is…” chest tags.
One is labeled as “Vetements 2019,” while the other is noted as “Balenciaga 2020.”
The post was captioned as “WTF” on Vetements’ Instagram.
Surely, many might be confused by the post as Balenciaga’s creative director since 2015 is Demna Gvasalia, who was previously the creative director of Vetements up until 2019.
Some might assume that the street brand is accusing Gvasalia of stealing its design for the luxury brand, but Vetements’ CEO is, after all, Gvasalia’s brother Guram.
So this could be also seen as a publicity stunt by the two brands trying to shed light on creative rights in the fashion industry, or simply a method to create buzz.
