NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy has released a new clip from the International Space Station to answer a most common question: “How do you go the bathroom?”
Cassidy took viewers on a mini-tour around the station and showcased the ISS’ current waste and hygiene compartment (WHC). In order to use it, crew members have to decide whether they are going number one or number two first.
For urination, astronauts have to turn on the system and tap on multiple control-panel lights to get the OK to urinate. Then, they will have to pee into a vacuum tube.
For the big business, astronauts use a “bowl,” which is around five to six inches in diameter. They have to poop into a bag, seal it, and put it in a bucket built for 30 “deposits.”
The current waste system shown in the video, however, is not the latest titanium toilet that NASA most recently implemented in space. The space agency spent US$23 million to prepare the newest model, which can be used by both male and female space-dwellers alike.
