Harley-Davidson has gotten off the beaten track to launch a brand wholly dedicated to electric bicycles.
The new Serial 1 Cycle Company is named after the first-ever motorcycle by Harley-Davidson, the Serial Number One—which also had pedals, as with other motorbikes from back in the day. With this diversion, Harley can start rolling out pedal-assisted electric bikes without affecting the name of its speedy choppers.
Along with the launch, Harley-Davidson has unveiled the prototype for its first e-bike, whose appearance also takes inspiration from the first Harley-Davidson motorbike itself. The sleek yet vintage concept sports white wheels, a leather saddle and hand grips, a mid-drive motor, as well as framed headlights and taillights.
It’s worth noting that the design is still very much a work in progress and may not turn out looking like this at launch. Harley-Davidson told Electrek that the setup is mainly a “styling exercise” at this juncture.
Unlike electric motorcycles, e-bikes are given just a slight push of horsepower from their motors. The rider still has to pedal, although the motor will make it easier for them to power through long distances and hilly areas. They can also only travel up to 28mph, Input Mag points out. A perk is you won’t need a motorbiker’s license to get this Harley spin-off.
The first Serial 1 e-bike will just be a little ways down the road, and is set to debut in March 2021. More details can be found on the new Serial 1 website.
