Scientific research has indicated that the most popular wall colors could also be the worst for creativity and productivity. Naturally, people have been feeling especially jaded in 2020, what with the pandemic forcing them to stay indoors most hours of the day. In response, many have been redecorating to accommodate new adjustments between home and work life.
IKEA’s Life at Home report pinpoints what exactly that households around the world have been focusing on for interior design as a result of COVID-19, and, well, things have changed. In findings spanning 20 global homes from the US to Sweden and Hong Kong, IKEA found that people have been yearning to get closer to nature, even if it means to take it inside.
Granted, introducing greenery in your surroundings isn’t a new trend, but the Swedish giant noted that people are now adding plants in their homes for mental health rather than for mere adornment. It also discovered that 35 percent wished they had a private garden or outdoor area.
Interestingly, while some respondents said they used to appreciate the opportunity of working close to home, 47 percent reported they would now “consider moving further from their place of work” from where they live.
Albert from China, one of the people surveyed, described, “I previously had to live close to my office. It was more important to me than anything else. But over the last few months, I’ve realized this is not so critical. What I want is a better home, somewhere where I can be comfortable and safe.”
Other prominent priorities that IKEA noticed included quality time with loved ones, as well as space to support new pastimes and lifestyle changes.
Dilip from Sweden shared, “If I was to make a post-2020 resolution, it would be to treat home as a place to live, rather than a hotel where I come in the evening to sleep before my next day at work.”
2019’s report saw an overarching challenge to “feel at home” at home. The unexpected circumstances in 2020 have indubitably forced people to make this a priority, now that remote working has become the default.
