John Lewis has unveiled its highly-anticipated Christmas ad—and it is set in a COVID-free world.
The two-minute ad, titled Give A Little Love, is filled with scenes of magical snowmen, Christmas crackers and a hedgehog who dreams of being a pigeon. The clip shows how a simple act of kindness can bring joy to people who are silently struggling.
The ad opens with a boy whose ball is stuck in a tree. He is approached by a little girl who releases her red heart-shaped umbrella, and the two then transform into an animated version of themselves.
The boy then goes on to present a heart-shaped balloon to a snowman, who uses it to lift himself from the puddle he is melting in. The snowman lands in the middle of a town center and presents a heart-shaped wheel to a couple of snowmen struggling with the car.
The ad is filled with a series of nine interconnecting vignettes created by eight different artists. Each scene is created differently—from hand-drawn animation to clay animation and cinematography.
According to The Drum, John Lewis very nearly decided against producing a 2020 advert to join its highly-anticipated Christmas campaigns.
“We nearly didn’t produce an advert this year,” explained James Morrison, Waitrose’s head of brand marketing. “We were scratching our heads thinking - is the best thing just to make a substantial charity donation?”
In the end, the company thought this would be a way to provide work for the creative community, who has been hit hard by the pandemic.
The ad is also aimed to raise money for Home-Start, which provides volunteers and supports to families with young children, and FareShare, which redistributes food to charities that turn it into meals.
