Google has developed an AI tool that allows users to draw up mystical monsters and bring them to life.
The ‘Chimera Painter’ carries the theme of a fantasy card game in which the imaginary monsters battle with each other.
The tool is powered by generative adversarial networks (GANs), which generate creations by placing two neutral networks over each other. One of the networks forms new images, while the other system identifies the designs that have been artificially formed.
The creators trained the GANs using thousands of computer-generated creature pictures, which were then matched with a “segmentation map” to display body parts. This lets users design new monsters by specifically drawing single parts of the monster’s anatomy.
“It is our hope that these GAN models and the Chimera Painter demonstration tool might inspire others to think differently about their art pipeline,” the creators stated in a blog post. “What can one create when using machine learning as a paintbrush?”
You can choose to draw up your very own monster, or customize the current designs available on the website. Try it here.
