2020 has made lasting impacts on the way people lead their lives. It even birthed the term “new normal” as people shift their routines to adjust to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Facebook has summed up the whole year in an extensive Year in Review roundup.
The social media platform conveyed the pitstops in 2020 via seven pivotal themes: Icons, Social Awakening, COVID-19, Global Politics, Environmental Causes, Faith & Community.
Firstly, Facebook remembered the passings of legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg this year.
The platform then pointed to the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd. The Blackout Coalition, a Facebook group supporting Black businesses, also amassed 1.8 million members this year, making it the largest group among the US users.
When the pandemic struck, Facebook Live viewership saw a 50-percent spike as people searched for fitness classes, online performances, and more.
US politics were also heavily discussed, with over 10 million Facebook posts created the day Kamala Harris was announced in the vice-presidential selection. It also became the most mentioned moment in August 2020.
Climate change has always been a key topic online. In 2020, however, Facebook saw its largest fundraiser garner over US$35 million to help those affected by the Australian wildfires.
In a time where social distancing is a priority, Instagram turned out to be the platform where small businesses thrived. The platform accounted for over 47 million stories using the Support Small Business sticker worldwide in the past three months.
Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, the week of Easter and Passover in April became the largest period group video calls were made on Messenger. It was also the most popular week of Facebook Live broadcasts from spiritual pages.
In addition, Facebook listed out some of the top pop cultural moments in 2020, such as Netflix’s series Tiger King and Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s track WAP. View more insights from Facebook here.
