Netflix might be working on an ‘audio-only’ feature that allows users to listen to shows without having the screens on.
In October 2020, XDA Developers noticed evidence showing that the streaming platform had included the new feature into its system. The element has now been made available to some users in the form of a “Video On/Video Off” toggle button, which appears when users enable the full-screen mode.
By choosing to turn videos off, users will be able to listen to the video playback sound, with the screen turned to black. Android Police also discovered the new section in Netflix’s app settings, and it was described as: “Listen to shows [and] movies while using other apps or when your screen is locked. Enjoy your favorites, and use less data, with the video, turned off.”
The button seemed to appear when the app was used with headphones or external speakers.
It isn’t clear whether the tool will be helpful to users yet since it is a new implementation. However, users watching certain types of content like documentaries can surely benefit from just listening to the video instead of watching the content on the go.
