In spite of its numerous deck designs, UNO leans on the minimalist side with the usual colors and digits. American artist Nina Chanel Abney shakes things up with a new effervescent variation that illustrates the “frenetic pace” of modern life.
The new UNO Artiste Nina Chanel Abney cards are a collaboration between Mattel Creations and Pharrell’s Black Ambition nonprofit aimed to close the wealth gap for Black and Latinx entrepreneurs. In place of blank spaces, Abney filled the cards with expressive faces and relatable moods.
“I wanted the cards to have personality,” Abney detailed. “Because UNO can be such an emotional game, I thought it would be fun to create cards that could speak for themselves and elicit even more reaction from players than they already do.”
While some might argue there are already too many rules in UNO, Abney decided to make the game more competitive with a new ‘WILD NO’ card in the 112-piece deck.
Abney’s own paintings sport the brazen use of color to depict both representation and abstraction. She describes her work as “a bold, colorful composition of figuration and abstraction.”
The deck, priced at US$20, is part of UNO’s Artiste series which also includes a Keith Haring set. It is now open for pre-orders and will be officially available on 18 January 2021.
