With just days before the end of 2020, McDonald’s has presented customers with the one burger nobody has ever asked for.
While menu items unavailable in your country usually warrant some envy, internet users around the world are unanimously shell-shocked by the latest food combination by McDonald’s in China. It’s a funky Spam and Oreos burger that’s—maybe for the betterment of humankind—available for a limited time, with only 400,000 up for grabs.
As detailed in the promotional visuals, the burger is part of a collaboration with the canned meat company. McDonald’s China describes the sandwich to be filled with two slices of Spam, a layer of Oreo crumbs, followed by McDonald’s “classic burger sauce.”
The chain says that the flavor profile is a “double surprise,” as it combines the umami of Spam with the mild sweetness of Oreo cookies.
A stroke of gastronomical genius, or just plain gimmicky? We imagine the cookie crumbs will offer a little crunch to the soft texture of Spam, and perhaps help to mellow out the punch of MSG with their bittersweet flavor.
For something sweet and salty with both crunchy and melt-in-the-mouth textures that isn’t as offensive, how about just dipping your fries in soft-serve ice cream? Burger King in Singapore noticed that patrons loved pairing the two so much, it ended up turning the combo into an actual sundae.
