If you’ve been scrolling through your Instagram feed recently, you’d probably have come across photos of table settings with twisted taper candles. The trend is so hot right now, both literally and figuratively, that retailers are selling them at extremely marked-up prices.
Here’s the thing: there’s no need to pay for these attention-stealing candles. All you need are the ones you have now. Also, the steps to creating them are so simple, you can consider them an interior design hack.
In an IGTV segment with Martha Stewart on Creative & Cultivate’s series with Madewell, Queer Eye’s interior design expert Bobby Berk demonstrates how to make your own spiral candles with just water and a rolling pin.
To start off, soak some taper candles in hot water; this will make them malleable.
Then, take them out, place them on a flat surface, and gently roll them with a rolling pin. It’s important to be extra careful with them at this stage, as the candles might get too flat if you exert too much pressure and eventually get too brittle when the wax cools.
Finally, twist the top of the candle towards one direction and the bottom towards the other. And voilà!
Stewart was evidently impressed at the end of Berk’s tutorial.
The trick is a favorite among DIY enthusiasts, and has also been demonstrated by lifestyle influencers Johanne Kohlmetz and Karoline Dall. You can view their tutorials below.
If you’re hard-pressed for time, spiral taper candles are an instant and effective accent to bring a gorgeous twist—no pun intended—to your usual table setting. Now you can have them on hand all the time.
