Ahead of the opening of the Super Nintendo World theme park, Nintendo has launched a website showcasing more information about the location. Already, fans are being taken on a little thrill ride.
The loading page of the Super Nintendo World website features a 3D image of poster boy Mario. While most would assume that the model was created by Nintendo itself, there’s reason to believe that the artwork had come from a fan, Kotaku reports.
Sharing side-by-side pictures of Nintendo’s visual and their 3D render, Mario fan concept artist Ujiidow wrote on Twitter, “I love how Nintendo used MY old ass Mario render in their official Nintendo World website.”
Ujiidow’s version was created using open-source animation program Blender and features a render by 3D artist RafaKnight. The artist told Kotaku that they have reached out to Universal Studios to enquire about the artwork, but haven’t gotten a reply yet.
This discovery comes just after Nintendo embarked on a copyright infringement hunt against fan-made projects and slapped game distribution website GameJolt with a DMCA notice. Members of the r/gaming subreddit ridiculed the possible double standards in a post that has since been upvoted more than 60,000 times.
On the bright side, Ujiidow isn’t taking the suspected copying to heart. “I’m so used to my Mario renders getting very little attention…” he told Kotaku. “For my render to be mistaken for an official one shows I’m kind of doing something right here.”
