Holographs may not be in the mainstream yet, but LG believes it might have found a more realistic way to bring “floating” images to the real world. The South Korean tech company has been presenting transparent OLED displays in several applications of late, with the newest concepts appearing at the 2021 CES trade show.
Starting from your home, LG Display has showcased a ‘Smart Bed’ with a see-through 55-inch OLED screen that surfaces from the foot of the bed at the push of a button. The display sports 40-percent transparency, allowing you to peer through “crystal-clear” visuals.
Thanks to its flexible see-through nature, the ‘Smart Bed’ screen can cast content in various aspect ratios and at different directions. The frame can also be moved around the house.
LG Display also teased the use of transparent OLEDs in public areas, such as in sushi restaurants and subway trains. Esquire Middle East reports that the company has proposed using a transparent 55-inch television as a social-distancing partition. It not only enables patrons to pull up information like the menu and place their orders, but also serves as a barrier between personnel and guests—a welcome idea in the contactless era.
The company envisions that, on public transport, clear OLED displays can replace train windows to beam data like subway line maps, the weather, and the news. And since they’re transparent, they won’t compromise the view.
“Transparent OLED is a technology that maximizes the advantages of OLED and can be used in various places in our daily lives, from stores, shopping malls, and architectural interiors to autonomous vehicles, subway trains, and aircraft,” suggested Jong-sun Park, LG Display’s Senior Vice President & Head of the Commercial Business Unit. “It will grow into a next-generation display that can change the existing display paradigm.”
This definitely takes watching TV in bed to the next level. It's LG's 55-inch Transparent OLED Smart Bed. You can move the frame to the foot of any bed, hiding the translucent screen in the frame until you push a button for a full or partial rise. #CES2021 pic.twitter.com/qWaCotTaJl
