You’ve heard of all types of food that taste like chicken. This thing that looks like chicken, however, does not.
The bucket of crisp delights is, in actual fact, filled with ice cream treats shaped to resemble fried chicken down to the bone. Concocted by Chef Cynthia Wong, a six-time finalist for the James Beard Awards’ Outstanding Pastry Chef, the ‘Not Fried Chicken’ ice cream is one peck of a mind warp.
Under the brand name Life Raft Treats, an artisan ice cream truck in South Carolina, Chef Wong invented the trippy dessert by coating drumstick-shaped ice cream with a “batter” of crushed cornflakes. The illusion doesn’t end even after you take a bite—each “drumstick” is held together with caramelized white chocolate “meat” and embedded with a chocolate-covered cookie mimicking a chicken bone.
Despite what its packaging suggests, the dessert does not contain chicken.
Wong churns her ice cream from quality locally-farmed dairy, eggs, and other ingredients. So even if this “chicken” comes frozen, freshness is guaranteed.
Images of this snack are making their rounds, and internet users are understandably amused by them. One Facebook user who has tried the ice cream shares that it was “good [as f**k].”
Feeling chook too? You can order the ‘Not Fried Chicken’ for US$99 plus shipping for a nine-piece bucket or nab a 20-piece bucket for US$149 on Goldbelly.
