Architecture firm Populous has revealed its design for a US$500 million convention, entertainment and e-sports center in downtown Toronto, Canada.
The building, which is set to complete in 2025, will sit on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). OverActive Media (OAM), an international media and entertainment company, is serving as the project’s developer.
The 7,000-seat venue will have a distinctive front that looks more like a spaceship than a typical opera house. The upper cantilevered portion will feature a blackened metal, which will be lined with a strip of LED screens that will taper along the bulbous building.
The stadium will be a multipurpose place, and flexible enough to become an e-sports arena and a concert hall, per Populous.
“The design of the theater was neither conceived as a sports area nor an opera house, rather a new typology that straddles the two—a state-of-the-art performance venue,” said Populous senior principal Jonathan Mallie.
“It has always been our intention to develop a venue and hosting strategy and to build a facility that could not only serve as an iconic home for our two franchises but ultimately emerge as a global hub for major international esports events,” OverActive Media CEO, Chris Overholt, said.
We're excited to partner with @OverActiveMedia to deliver a first-of-its-kind theatre-style entertainment venue and hotel complex that will help shape the future of Toronto.
