Your staring contests with the rainbow wheel are getting cut short. On Wednesday, Adobe made an announcement Apple users might have been waiting a long time for: that Photoshop is now built to run natively on Mac devices powered by the high-performance M1 chip. Being tailored for the M1 chip, which is touted by Apple to deliver up to double the CPU performance of PC chips, enables “significant performance gains” across the software.
According to Adobe, internal tests resulted in several features performing 1.5 times faster on average in comparison to similar previous systems. These include opening and saving documents, running filters, and the use of more rigorous functions like Content-Aware Fill and Select Subject. They “all feel noticeably faster,” Adobe notes.
Adobe says it is working with Apple to bring more improvements to Photoshop, including optimizing performance for recently introduced settings like Invite to Edit Cloud Documents and Preset Syncing. As it is, though, this first version is already impressive.
“The performance gains across the rest of the application were so great we didn’t want to hold back the release for everyone while the team wraps up work on these last few features,” reveals product management lead Pam Clark.
Users of the 2020 MacBook Air, 2020 MacBook Pro, and the new Mac mini will be able to enjoy the benefits of the upgrades.
