Three decades on, an art heist dubbed as the “biggest” one in history remains unsolved.
Netflix explores the elusive crime with four-part investigative documentary series This is a Robbery, slated to stream on April 7. A new trailer released by the streaming platform shares some of the speculations about the theft that have arisen over the years, including a theory about the mafia being involved.
In the early hours of March 18, 1990, two men pretending to be cops walked into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, an establishment in possession of millions of dollars’ worth of art ranging from Rembrandts to Vermeers.
“This is a robbery,” the men calmly told the museum’s staff. Within the next hour, the pair made away with 13 artworks—most notably The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, the only Rembrandt seascape in existence.
Desperate to find some closure, museum officials have extended a US$10 million reward for anyone with information that could help them locate the works of art, collectively valued at half a billion dollars.
Today, the frames of the 13 paintings are still left vacant. “I feel that they are waiting for the work to come back,” declares one of the people in the documentary.
This is a Robbery was produced by Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh of Tribeca Film, the institute behind The Irishman and When They See Us; along with sports producer Colin Barnicle and Nick Barnicle. Check out its trailer below.
