IKEA is bringing flat-pack culture to the outdoors, but not in the form of chairs or tents. Nay, the furniture giant is doing commuters and backpackers one—or three—better with a pillow that extends into a sleeping coat or coat when need be.
The new FÄLTMAL pillow/quilt serves as a lightweight to keep you warm and rested during your daily travels. It starts out as a plush cushion but can be unzipped into an avant-garde coat if you’re feeling a little chilly on the commute.
For more comfort, the pillow can double as a large body quilt or sleeping bag for “relaxing in the hammock or cuddling up in the sofa,” IKEA describes. And when you’re done, it can easily be packed into a cushion again to be carried around.
A nice touch is the button fastening that keeps the piece in place as you reach for a drink.
While the design is more unorthodox than IKEA’s usual staple pieces, it seems in line with the company’s vision for sustainability. With the three-in-one piece, there should be less energy and fewer materials required during the manufacturing process. It also cleverly stretches the item’s utility.
The whimsical, multipurpose cushion is now available in the US for US$34.99.
