In these strange times, contactless everything is imperative. As high-tech as these ideas sound on paper, though, they often end up working clumsily. However, Singapore-based multidisciplinary design studio STUCK Design might have found a seamless alternative for both automatic and sliding doors.
While sliding and automatic doors have been around for years, the pandemic calls for the prevalence of these inventions. The firm’s variation, the Kinetic Touchless Doors, takes away the need to press onto sliding doors, which often leave behind icky fingerprints, and the energy-draining sensors of automatic doors, which tend to open whenever the slightest movement is detected.
This version uses sliding hand movements as feedback, only reacting when it senses your hand reaching out and moving to open or close the door.

“As your hand moves towards the door, as one would reach for a door handle, the door is activated and responds with a slider interface,” the studio explains in a statement.

Not only are Kinetic Touchless Doors a safe and contactless option, but they also revive the satisfaction of pushing and pulling doors by hand. On top of that, you “reclaim” the control of how far you want the door to be open.
“Reclaiming control over these automatic doors reduces wasteful energy consumption and even curbs frustrations over waiting for doors to open and close for you,” STUCK Design elaborates.
The studio previously proposed a Kinetic Touchless Button that mimics the tactility of pushing elevator buttons without actually touching them.
