Lifestyle and entertainment magazine Playboy has announced that it will launch digital collectibles in the form of NFTs, via a partnership with non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace Nifty Gateway.
The magazine plans to tap into its 67-year archive of classic photography and artwork and collaborate with modern artists on new artwork to sell as crypto-collectibles. It also intends to offer grants to “support emerging and underrepresented artists entering the NFT art community,” per the press release.
The first Playboy NFT drop will feature an artwork created by Mike “Slimesunday” Parisella, a former Playboy print collaborator and an artist known for his erotic collage-style compositions. It also announced a June collection with 3D artist Blake Kathryn, who will develop a Pride-themed collaboration with the magazine.
Playboy’s announcement states that since its archives include classic magazine imagery from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Keith Haring, and Andy Warhol, it is only natural to dabble into NFTs.
The press release also suggests that the brand has long-term plans with Nifty Gateway, and reveals that the duo wishes to tap into its library of artwork, photography, cartoons, and more.
